Intoxicating tablets, banned medicines worth Rs 1.5 cr seized in UP

A joint team of police and drug department busted an inter-state gang of drug smugglers and seized lakhs of intoxicating tablets and other banned medicines worth Rs 1.5 crore on Friday, officials said.

Four persons were arrested in connection with the seizure, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team with the help of drug department seized a large quantity of intoxicating tablets, injections and other prohibited medicines, SSP Abhishek Yadav told newspersons here.

He said the accused -- Sushil, Sahil, Shabban and Farman -- all residents of Muzaffarnagar, were arrested while a medical store owner, Anup Garg, has gone absconding.

The accused revealed that they used to procure drugs from places such as Agra and Bijnore and then stored it illegally at a godown here. They used to sell the drugs and banned medicines at higher prices in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Aligarh, Ghaziabad and other districts in Uttar Pradesh. They also smuggled drugs to Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana, the SSP said.
