Top Army officials and families of martyrs were among those who today paid tributes to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives but ensured the country's victory in the Kargil conflict over Pakistan.
The 19th Anniversary commemoration of the 'Kargil Vijay Diwas' culminated in Drass, in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said.
He said a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Kargil War Memorial was led by Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command.
Gallantry award winners, next of kin of the martyrs, 'veer-naaris' (widows of martyrs), senior Army officers and civil dignitaries paid tributes to the brave soldiers, the spokesman said.
He said the tributes were followed by a pledge taken by all service personnel at the function to re-dedicate themselves to the service of the nation.
The sombre mood at the ceremony brought home memories of the losses borne so proudly by the martyrs' families, the spokesman said adding many in the audience were moved to tears when buglers played the poignant 'The Last Post' tune after the wreath laying.
The event was celebrated with full military decorum and solemnity, the spokesman said.
He said the GOC-in-C while talking to the media thanked them for participating in the event and said that commemoration is the Army's modest homage to the martyrs and a way of remembering the contribution of the units and formations in the conflict that gave India its finest victory in recent times.
