Kerala to extend voting rights to NRKs in civic polls

Press Trust of India Thiruvananthapuram

Disclosing this during his briefing after a meeting of the state Cabinet, Information Minister K C Joseph said the government would bring in a bill to amend the Panchayatiraj Act in this regard.

The move would enable the NRKs to participate in voting for multi-tier panchayats and municipalities and city corporations in their respective localities.

At this stage, however, it would be difficult to make voting arrangements in Indian embassies in various countries, he said.

The proposal was on the lines of the Centre's decision extending voting right to NRIs in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, he said.

The Minister, however, said he could not say for certain whether the bill would be brought in the Assembly session slated for next month.

The local body polls are due in the state in 2015.
