At least 200 people and around 70 vehicles have been trapped in a mountain town today after landslides cut off a highway in Tibet Autonomous Region.

No casualties have been reported. Rescuers have rushed to the landslide site in Ra'og Town, Qamdo County in east Tibet to help the trapped drivers and passengers evacuate, said Li Shijie, head of the rescue team.

"We have prepared food and medical services for them. But it may take several days to clear up the site before traffic resumes," said Li.

A road section of more than 100 meters was covered with mud and rocks piled up as high as eight metres in some places, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Police have imposed traffic controls on the road. Two excavators and more than 70 workers are working at the site.
