In the wake of outbreak of Avian flu in parts of neighbouring Kerala, Tamil Nadu officials today stopped transport of chicken and ducks from that state at various border checkpoints in Nilgiris District.

Officials from Animal Husbandry and Health department stopped 30 lorries, carrying chicken and ducks from Kerala at Soladi and Cherampadi checkposts, official sources said.

Similarly, six lorries carrying chicks were stopped at Kakkanalla checkpost on Karnataka side, they said.

Though there was no immediate report of bird flu in Tamil Nadu, this was a preventive measure, they said.

A red alert has been sounded in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala following outbreak of Avian Flu or bird flu a couple of days ago with lab tests confirming mass death of ducks due to the deadly disease.
