A 43-year-old man has been arrested allegedly for "abetment" to suicide of his minor daughter, who set herself on fire, in Bhawanimadi town of Jhalawar district, police said today.
The 17-year-old girl last morning committed suicide by setting herself afire as she was upset over being regularly beaten and scolded by her father who allegedly attempted to sexually assault her too, Circle In-charge of Bhawanimandi police station Sunil Kumar said.
The girl's mother alleged that her husband had several times attempted to sexually exploit their daughter, the officer said.
On the basis of her mother's complaint, a case was registered against the girl's father on the charge of abetment of suicide of child, which attracts life imprisonment as punishment, Kumar said.
The accused, who had escaped after his daughter had committed suicide, was last night arrested and was today produced before a court that sent him to judicial custody, the CI said.
The body was handed over to her family members after postmortem, the officer added.
