Man held for smuggling gold worth Rs 61 lakh

A man was arrested today by Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth around Rs 61 lakh into the country.

The accused was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai.

Detailed examination of his baggage and personal search resulted in recovery of 2.08 kg of gold from him, a press release issued by the Customs said.

The passenger was allegedly carrying 36 gold metal strips coated with a white material, weighing 1.388 kg, concealed in the transformer of an amplifier, and one gold metal rod in cylinder shape (coated with a white material), weighing 700 gms, it said.
 

The gold items, which have been seized, are valued at Rs 60.88 lakh, the release said, adding the passenger has been arrested.
