Man involved in series of burglary, murder held

A man involved in more than 25 theft cases in the last one year in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts was arrested and Rs 40 lakh worth gold ornaments seized, police said today.

Investigation in the murder of a woman for gain in Koilpalayam on the outskirts on September 17, pointed the needle of suspicion towards the Selvaraj (45) of Palani in Dindigul district and he was nabbed late last night, Superintendent of Police, Sudhagar told reporters here.

Based on information provided by him, police recovered 173 sovereign of gold ornaments worth over Rs 40 lakh pledged at various places in Palani and nearby areas. Police also recovered an iron rod, gloves, screw drivers and some other material used for the robbery and a scale to weigh the ornaments.
 

Selvaraj started stealing at the age of 19 and was detained under Goondas Act in 1985 and 2000 and again in 2009 in Madurai for various offences, he said.

Though he attempted to eke his livelihood by doing hotel and provision stores business, loss of money made him to return to his old profession, he said.

Selvaraj was involved in 27 cases of housebreaking, burglary and theft at various places in the districts in the last one year and had stolen 300 sovereign of gold ornaments, Sudhagar said.
