Muslim Brotherhood spokesman arrested

The spokesman of Egypt' Muslim Brotherhood was today arrested by army-backed authorities as part of a widening crackdown on Islamists since the ouster of former president Mohammed Morsi.

Spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood Gehad El-Haddad was arrested from an apartment in Cairo's Nasr City.

El-Haddad was arrested along with Morsi-era governor of Qalyoubia Hossam Abu El-Bakr.

Muslim Brotherhood has been facing crackdown since the violent dispersal of two sit-ins on August 14 as they were demanding the reinstatement of deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

Morsi was ousted on May 3 by the powerful army. Since then the security forces have carried out mass arrests of prominent members of the Muslim Brotherhood, many of whom have been charged with 'inciting violence and murder.
