The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday said it has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu government over the reported suicide of a man in police custody in Cuddalore district.

The panel in its notice to state Director General of Police J K Tripathy sought a detailed report within six weeks.

In a statement, the NHRC said apparently due to 'negligence' of the police personnel, an accused, who was in their custody, lost life, which amounts to violation of his human rights.

The 24-year-old man, arrested on charges of cheating, reportedly died in police custody Thursday morning.

Police claimed he committed suicide by hanging himself from the window of the toilet.

"The Commission has issued a notice to TN DGP calling for a detailed report in the matter including Inquest Report, Post-mortem Examination Report and report of the Magisterial Enquiry conducted in the matter, within 6 weeks," the commission said.
