The National People's Party (NPP) today sought deployment of at least three companies of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel to rain-hit Garo Hills region in Meghalaya for rescue operations.
"We request the Centre to immediately deploy three companies of NDRF to the state specially in the Garo Hills region," NPP national president P A Sangma said in a letter to Union Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh.
Stating that the flood situation was "grave", the MP from Garo Hills said the Centre's assistance was required immediately. "Ten people have gone missing and a large number of people have been displaced," Sangma said.

Seven persons have died due to the floods in South West Garo Hills district, district deputy commissioner Ram Singh said.
West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi said Chibinang and Tikrikilla were the worst affected and more than 100 BSF personnel were continuing the rescue efforts.
Rescue operations have been hit in the area as people were unable to contact due to poor mobile network services.
