A day after four persons were detained here in connection with the gang rape of a 72-year-old nun in West Bengal's Nadia district, Punjab police is waiting for their counterparts in Kolkata to identify the alleged culprits.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Naveen Singla today said that the search operation was conducted on the inputs of the Bengal police.
Police said that it was confirmed during the preliminary investigations that all the four persons were dreaded criminals and they had created havoc in the state of West Bengal and nearby areas.
Investigating teams were facing a serious language problem during the interrogation so they arranged for an interpreter and it was confirmed that the accused were Bangladeshi nationals, he said.
They were hatching a conspiracy to commit serious crimes in Ludhiana also, Singla said.
Police remained tight lipped on their role in the gang rape episode.
"It is a very sensitive case. We did the search operation on the inputs of the Bengal police. Let them identify the accused," he said.
The septuagenarian nun was gang raped at a convent by unknown people at Ranaghat in West Bengal on March 14.
