Customs officials have seized 11.68
kg of opium worth Rs 2.33 crore being sent as a consignment marked 'cumin candy' to Australia, from a warehouse here.
Department officials acting on a tip recovered the contraband on Wednesday and arrested the consignor who had declared the parcel bound for Australa as 'Jeera Goli' (Cumin Candy).
Officials also seized white crystalline powder suspected to be pseudo ephedrine from a parcel which was declared as sarees and garments.
Each saree was wrapped in two cardboard sheets. As they were heavy, the officials on opening the sheets found white crystalline powder inside.
A release said on Friday 4.78 kg of white crystalline powder suspected to be pseudo ephedrine and valued at Rs 7 lakh was recovered.
The customs department said opium is a highly addictive narcotic drug obtained from poppy plant used in the manufacture of heroin.
On the other hand, pseudo ephedrine is used in manufacturing amphetamines, a psychotropic substance which increases alertness and awareness, according to the release.
