AAP MLAs today alleged that their "political foes" are attacking doctors at government hospitals in a bid to "malign" the image of Delhi Government.
Highlighting the issue of attack on government doctors, Health Minister Satyendra Jain today wrote to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi, seeking police protection for doctors at government hospitals.
"Incidents of violence against doctors in government hospitals are reported regularly. The frequency of such incidents seems to have increased recently. As a result, resident doctors of all hospitals went on strike," Jain wrote in his letter.
The government with continuous interaction with the doctors persuaded them to rejoin their and promised to ensure security," he said.
AAP MLAs also raised the issue of attack on government doctors in presence of policemen and said doctors at various hospitals were allegedly beaten up in six incidents after the government promised to give them protection.
This week resident doctors of over 20 government hospitals went on strike. The government acceded to 24 demands made by them and Health Minister Jain assured them of security. Jain also met the Delhi Lt Governor seeking police cover.
Jain, in his letter to the LG, requested him to deploy five policemen in smaller hospitals and around 10 policemen in large hospitals round-the-clock in emergency and causality blocks.
"When doctors' demands were accepted, they were promised security at work place," AAP MLA Alka Lamba said in the Assembly during the Budget Session.
She said on June 24 at Lal Bahadur Shashtri Hospital a doctor was attacked. On the same day at around 11 pm a doctor was threatened at Babu Jagjivan hospital.
On June 25, a junior doctor was attacked at Maharshi Valmiki hospital. In another hospital, a doctor was beaten up which was recorded on CCTV and even doctors have captured the incident on mobile.
"Shockingly a doctor was beaten up at Bhagwan Mahavir hospital at 9 pm by a criminal who were brought by four Delhi police officers for medical examination. Doctor was attacked in front of cops but they did not help him. I wonder if cops are incapable to give protection to doctors or part of conspiracy. As the incident happened in front of them," Lamba said.
Highlighting the incident of Bhagwan Mahavir hospital, Jain in his letter asked LG and Delhi Police to conduct an enquiry in such cases and fix responsibility against the guilty person.
"The report of the enquiry and action taken against the police personal may be sent to me in 15 days," Jain wrote. Meanwhile, the government held a meeting with doctors and assured them of protection.
