Politicians cutting across party lines paid tributes today to Congress veteran Gurudas Kamat at a condolence meeting held here.

The former Union minister, 63, died on August 22 after suffering a heart attack in Delhi.

The Nehru-Gandhi family loyalist was known for his forthrightness throughout his career spanning over four decades,

"In the form of Kamat, we have lost a leader who was loyal to the ideology of the party and one who would stand with grassroot workers. It is a void which can never be filled," Congress general secretary in-charge for Maharashtra Mallikarjun Kharge said at the meeting.

Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan described Kamat, a resident of suburban Chembur, as a close friend and recalled how he would raise issues concerning Mumbai.

Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, state BJP ministers Vinod Tawde and Prakash Mehta, Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Samajwadi Party's Abu Azmi, MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar and others also paid tributes to Kamat.
