Banking service to customers for exchanging demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was smooth on the first day today even as the pressure is expected to continue for a week, State Bank of Hyderabad managing director Santanu Mukherjee said today.

"There were long queues at most of the important branches across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. It may continue for a week. General Managers have been given power to extend branch timings if required. Our staff are doing excellent job. There is no problem at all," Mukherjee told PTI.

He said most of SBH's 2000 ATMs across the country are ready to serve people tomorrow once they open.

According to him, SBH has about 2000 ATMs and nearly equal number of branches across the country.

According to RBI norms a person can exchange only Rs 4000 of the old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 with lower denomination from today.

A senior official of State Bank of India said they deployed additional staff to assist the counter staff and also increased the number of counters in view of the rush to exchange old notes.

"Counters are open till 6 PM. Business was smooth today," the official said.

SBI has about 2650 branches and 1600 ATMs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma said the department has deployed forces to oversee the security at bank branches and no untoward incidents were reported.
