Press Trust of India Mumbai
Southern Army Commander Lt Gen Bipin Rawat today inaugurated a renovated Sainik Udyan, having a 12-feet tall statue of a soldier, in Colaba here.

The garden, dedicated to spirit of soldiers, was constructed at a cost of over Rs 28 lakh. It also has an historical military tank, which was inducted in the then British Army in 1942.

The tank is named after after General Willian Sherman, who had earned laurels for Union Forces for his role in the American Civil war. The tank last served the Indian Army in the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war and then it was phased out of the service.

Defence sources said there is a plan to convert the garden into a war memorial, but the final decision in this regard is yet to be taken.
