A 25-year-old man was shot dead after he tried to chase the robbers who looted his house at Hudla village of Dausa district of Rajasthan, police said today.

On the intervening night of November 15 and 16, at least six robbers looted jewellery worth about Rs 6 lakh and Rs 50,000 cash from the house of Khemraj Meena while his family members were asleep, they said.

The family members woke up only after the robbers broke down a door following which Meena, who used to transport construction material in tractor-trolleys for livelihood, tried to chase them but was shot dead, they said.

Following his death, irate locals staged a protest yesterday and accompanied by Meena's family members did not allow doctors at Mahua hospital to perform postmortem, police said.

The body is in the mortuary as talks are on between the district administration and the locals who are demanding arrest of the accused and compensation for the family, they said.

Police said two persons have been detained for interrogation and added that on the basis of a complaint by victim's father an FIR has been lodged with Mahua police.

An investigation is underway in the case, they said.

Local MLA Om Prakash also met with the victim's family.
