US President Donald Trump today asked people to always report if they find anything suspicious and said there were so many signs that the Florida school shooter, who massacred 17 people, was mentally disturbed.

An expelled former student armed with a powerful assault rifle unleashed a hail of gunfire at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, killing at least 17 people and injuring over a dozen others, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in the US.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, who was expelled for disciplinary reasons, was arrested shortly after the deadly rampage yesterday.

So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behaviour, Trump said in a early morning tweet.

The entire list of the victims has not been released by the local law enforcement officials.

Nicolas Cruz was the killer. He is in custody. We already began to dissect his websites and social media that he was on... some of the things that come to mind are very, very disturbing, Broward County Sherriff Scott Israel told reporters at a news conference in Florida.

Cruz had countless magazines and had one AR-15 rifle.

In his tweet, Trump said neighbours and classmates knew about Cruz.

"Neighbours and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again! Trump said.

In a proclamation, Trump directed that the flags be flown at half-staff in memory of the victims of the shooting.

Cruz has been booked into a jail on charges of 17 counts of murder. He is expected to make a court appearance later in the day.
