Six students of Government Law College at Madurai have been suspended for allegedly taking part in an agitation before the Madras High Court Chief Justice's bench on September 14 demanding that Tamil be made the court language.

In a communication to Additional Solicitor General, G Rajagopalan, Director Legal Studies, Professor N S Santhoshkumar informed that six students have been identified and suspended with effect from September 25.

The College Principal has also formed an inquiry committee to probe the matter and further action would be pursued against the students based on the report, it was stated.

Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and other judges, Additional Solicitor General of India G Rajagopalan referred to the orders passed by the High Court in 2001 that the Court would not remain a mute spectator tolerating such activities of boycott and shouting slogans in the High Court Campus.

He requested the Judges and the Chief Justice to take action against those responsible for calling boycott of the courts on September 28.

Referring to the participation of Members of Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at a State Level meeting organised by Tiruchi Bar Association urging withdrawal of Bar Council of India order suspending 15 lawyers, he sought a suitable direction to BCI to take action against the members who participated in the meeting.
