A social organisation has demanded immediate halt of the transportation of iron ore from Surjagad Hills in Maharashtra's Gadchrioli district and road construction work in the area.

An intensive agitation will be launched if the demands are not considered, it said.

A delegation of the Janhitwadi Yuwa Samiti, a social organisation from Etapalli in the district, yesterday submitted a memorandum, addressed to President Pranab Mukherjee, to the tehsildar here.

The memorandum recalled several agitations held by the organisation earlier for pressing the demand to set up industries pertaining to iron ore work in Gadchiroli itself and not to carry the raw material out of the district.

The samiti had taken out a foot march from Surjagad to Gadchiroli, held dharna in front of the collectorate, and organised 'Thiyya' agitation in front of the public representatives of the district, it said.

Despite promises from the government, the iron ore was being carried out of the district and a road being constructed for the purpose which was injustice to the people of the district. The government is playing with the sentiments of the people and has lost their faith by allowing the companies to carry away the ore, said the memorandum.

The ongoing work of transporting the ore should be stopped immediately, it demanded.
