He was 88.

"It happened suddenly. He was sitting on a chair and did not respond when spoken to. A doctor was called who pronounced him dead," said a source close to the former cricketer. Gavaskar, who is in Dubai, is on his way to Bangalore, the source added.

He passed away at the residence of his daughter Kavita , who is married to former Test star Gundappa Visvanath.
