The Centre today constituted a task force to implement welfare programmes for tribals in Kerala's Attapady where more than 40 child deaths were reported in last one year mainly due to malnutrition.

The inter-ministerial task force, chaired by an Additional Secretary in Rural Development Ministry, comprises officials of the rank of Deputy Secretaries from the Ministries including Health, Women and Child Welfare, Tribal Affairs and HRD.

The first meeting of the task group will be held on June 24, official sources said.

During his visit to Attapady in Palakkad district recently, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had announced that a task force would be constituted to implement welfare schemes and oversee the development of the area under a special package.

Sources said the first meeting of the task force would discuss the programmes and projects which can be taken up in Attappady in a convergent manner.
