A grenade attack at a garage in the eastern Kenyan town of Garissa left three people wounded, a local police chief has said.

Two to three young men flung the grenade into the workshop, wounding three mechanics, before fleeing, Garissa county police chief Charles Kinyua said yesterday.

The motive for the attack, which took place close to the Somali border, was not immediately clear.

Kenya has been hit by a wave of grenade and gun attacks, often blamed on sympathisers of Somalia's Shebab Islamist fighters and sometimes aimed at police targets, since the army went into Somalia in 2011 to flush out the Shebab.
