Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan today dismissed reports that residential areas would be acquired for the proposed Colachel port in the district and said about 1,000 acres of land would be made available from the sea to build the port.
The survey for the proposed commercial port had been completed and other works were in the initial stages, he told reporters here.
Putting to rest the fear among people over losing their land, the Union Minister of state for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping said a section was spreading false information regarding the proposed port for political gains.
The Centre had last month approved the proposal to build the major port entailing an investment of about Rs 25,000 crore.
