Villagers held for beating up forest officials

A forester patrolling Mandvi forest and a forest guard were allegedly beaten up by a group of villagers, a police official said here today.

Assistant police inspector S D Jangam of the Virar police station told PTI that Range Forest Officer Jagannath Bhoir was with the forester at around 10.30 am, when they spotted a villager cutting wood.

They apprehended him and took him into custody even as a woman who was with him, fled the spot.

Within minutes, other people arrived on the scene, beat up both the forest officials as well as rescued the detained villager from their custody, according to a complaint lodged at the Virar police station, the police official said.
 

The names of the detained person is Madhur Vanzari, while the others who attacked the forest personnel are Eknath Vanzari, Dharma Kimbal and Vishnu Khimbal, the police official said.

An offence under Sections 353, Section 332 and Section 225 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused, though no arrest has been made so far, the police official said.
