A 24-year-old woman inmate of Rampur Jail allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her cell with the help of a scarf, police said today.
Gita was arrested in January last year for allegedly poisoning her husband to death and since then she was in jail, they said.
On Saturday, the police officials found her body hanging in her cell.
Gita had allegedly poisoned her husband Kunwarpal of Janunagar village after serious altercations between the two.
Her relatives have alleged that women constables of jail had been harassing her but jailor Aditya Kumar claimed that Gita was mentally depressed and was being treated in Bareilly.
The district magistrate has ordered a magisterial enquiry and deputed SDM (Sadar) to conduct the proceedings.
