Bank Officers Call For Strike On July 4

BSCAL

A nation wide bank strike has been called by all the main officer and employee bank unions in the country on July 4 to protest against the 'indifferent attitude' of the government on various issues affecting the workforce, banking industry and investing public.

The unions, which have directed almost a million members to strike, include Aibea, Aiboc, NCBE, Aiboa, Befi, Inboc, Inbef, Nobo and Nobw.

Representatives of these unions met on June 3 and unanimously decided to strike on July 4.

The strike, originally slated for April 4, was postponed in view of the uncertain political situation. Officers and employees of public and private sector banks, foreign banks, regional rural banks (RRBs) and cooperative banks will observe the strike.

The agitation is being called against establishment of Local Area Banks, for implementation of the pension scheme in private banks, withdrawal of clause in pension regulations that deny this facility to employees/officers for participation in strike, introduction of the scheme in cooperative banks and RRBs, rejection of Mahalik Committee report on sixth bipartite settlement/officers' salary revision in regional rural banks, lifting ban on recruitment and compassionate appointment, removal of ceiling on gratuity & bonus and immediate ban on non-banking finance companies on accepting deposits from public/companies.

The strike has also been called to condemn the top functionaries of the government and the Reserve Bank of India, who, according to the united forum of bank unions, perpetrated the CRB crisis by their 'inept handling' and allowed NBFCs to ruin the investing public.
