Bjps Bogey

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The BJPs so-called Hindutva agenda has become quite a bogey; the most charitable response to it is V P Singhs advice (Post-poll scenario cause of VPs pro-Sonia line, February 18) to put it in deep freeze for 15 years. A dispassionate look fails to show what precisely should be put away.
With 80 per cent of the population subscribing to the Hindu ethos, Hindutva is already very much a part of the national lore, be it in language, personal conduct, official ceremonials, state symbols, or whatever. The proposal for a uniform civil code is the only distinguishing feature that can be attributed to the BJP.

The partys stance on Article 370 and restoration of vandalised temples are patently political postures; no one seriously believes that either objective can be achieved by anything other than consensus.
The red herring of a uniform civil code survives because the Muslim leadership does not have the sense to stop opposing it and leave it to the Hindus to contend over the issue amongst themselves; if they (Hindus) could not agree on a uniform, reformed Hindu code, is there any prospect of an all-denominational code emerging out of the chaos except perhaps as a voluntary option?
