Cbi Failed To Act On Tip-Off On Bhansalis Moves In 96

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had received a tip-off on the CRB group as early as in March 1996. The agency was alerted to the large number of companies being floated by the group, sources said yesterday.
However, the tip-off was not pursued, sources said.
CBI sources said that the anti-corruption cell of the investigating agency had received information in March 1996 that group chairman C R Bhansali was floating a number of companies.

CBI sources said that had an inquiry been conducted, the scam would have come to light and the damages could have been contained. They said that based on the information, the then superintendent of police, Y P Singh had opened a file on the matter.
However, the officer was transferred a few days later. Singh was transferred a few days after that and what happened later is not known, the sources said. The matter should have been investigated to a logical end. Singhs successor could have handled the matter. It is not yet known as to what happened to the case, the sources said.
All information we receive have to be looked into. If we find that there is no substance in the information we have received, it wont be pursued further. Otherwise, preliminary checks are conducted and a case registered, a senior CBI official said.
Singh, who is now with the state police, refused to comment on the issue. I would take up the matter with the appropriate authority. Thats all I have to say, he said.
