Delhi Wakes Up To owerless' New Year

BSCAL

The capital woke up to a powerless new year yesterday with most areas experiencing prolonged loadshedding following tripping of all the four units of the Dadri thermal power station.

There were two successive faults at the Dadri switchyard at around 3.35 am resulting in the tripping of the four units (210x4 mw).

Simultaneously, one pole of the HVDC (high voltage direct current) Rihand-Dadri line also tripped while a second pole tripped after operating for about two hours.

Even before the incident, there was a shortage of 700 mw of power generation at Singrauli due to the outage of two units on boiler-tube linkage, an official press release said.

From early morning, the generation at the gas-based power station of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) was reduced by 400 mw because of maintenance work by the Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

Due to the outage of HVDC lines, generation of 400 mw had to be backed down.

The overall shortage in the region was 2,500 mw.

However, because of the total loss of generation at the Dadri thermal power station and the outage of HVDC lines, the brunt was borne by Delhi.

At present only 50 per cent of its requirement is being met and heavy loadshedding of 800 mw is being resorted to, the release said.

Oit addded that the process of restoration of the Dadri switchyard was in progress after which it would be possible bring back to operation the units at Dadri.

With the restoration of HVDC poles at 11.30 am, generation at the Singrauli/Rihand thermal power stations has been raised again, the release stated .

It said train services were not affected and the power-cut was restricted to Delhi only.
