Gokak Seeks Foreign Tieups For Public Sector Cos

The Indian telecom sector now offers many new opportunities for strategic alliances, including those with Indian government-owned companies such as Indian Telephone Industries Ltd, Hindustan Telephones Ltd and Telecommunications Consultants of India Ltd, said A V Gokak, chairman, Telecom Commission, and secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Addressing a gathering of American business executives and government officials, A V Gokak who is in Washington with a delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry said that the government would have no objection to foreign firms exploring possibilities within India.
Gokak also noted that the key issues facing basic services implementation such as assignability, force majeur, interconnect charges, and arbitration have all been sorted out and an agreement with the industry has been reached.
He said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was already in place and, specifically on the issue of interconect, it has been decided that operators and the telecom department would approach TRAI for a settlement.
