Imports From Epzs Lag Way Behind Exports

While exports from the seven export processing zones (EPZs) in the country have gone up by 39.24 per cent between 1997-98 and 1999-2000, imports by EPZs have gone up by only 15.7 per cent.
According to data released by the commerce ministry, exports from EPZs have gone up from Rs 4,817.30 crores in 1997-98 to Rs 6,707.44 crores (provisional) in 1999-2000. Imports by these zones have gone up to Rs 3,079.72 crores from Rs 2,661.89 crores in 1997-98.
The government has set up seven EPZs in the country at Kandla, Bombay, Noida, Chennai, Cochin, Falta and Visakhapatnam. 708 units were in operation in these zones as on 31 March 2000.
EPZ units fall under electronics, engineering items, chemicals and allied procuts, gem and jewellery, textiles, garments, plastics and rubber products.
