President Nominates Nine To Rajya Sabha

Noted scientist Dr Raja Ramanna, eminent film director Mrinal Sen, film star and social activist Shabana Azmi were among the nine prominent citizens nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President K R Narayanan yesterday

Besides Shabana Azmi, two other women were nominated to the Upper House. They are academician and former member of the union public service commission Selvi Dass, and social worker and close associate of Vinoba Bhave and Jayaprakash Narayan, Nirmala Deshpande.

Eminent journalist Kuldip Nayar has also been nominated to the upper house.

Gyan Peeth award winner and poet C Narayana Reddy, Punjabi writer Kartar Singh Duggal and social worker Chaudhury Har Mohan Singh Yadav are among the others who have been nominated to the Upper House. Of the nine nominated members, Dr Raja Ramanna was a minister in V P Singhs National Front government. These nine seats had been lying vacant for almost a year.

 

Other film stars already nominated to the house are Vyjyantimala, B B Datta and H R Nomani.
