Rs 12 Cr Aid For Weavers Houses

The Union government has released Rs 12.45 crore to state governments for the workshed-cum-housing scheme.
Stating this in the fourth Handloom Board meeting of the ministry of textiles, Kashiram Rana, minister of textiles said 76,218 units of workshed and workshed-cum-houses had been sanctioned to provide a better working environment to the weavers.
"The scheme has been drawn up keeping in view special requirements of weavers," Rana said.

The government is also planning to synergise the implementation capabilities and financial resources of the rural development ministry with that of the ministry of textiles to cover more weavers under the workshed-cum-housing scheme, he said.
Speaking about the incentives given to the weaver community, minister of state for textiles C Ramachandran said in the post-2004 era when the local markets would not be protected for the domestic industry, it would be required to provide special attention to the handloom sector.
To facilitate the handloom sector and to upgrade the weaving techniques, the government has also created a dedicated website for the benefit of the weaver community.
