Tata Timken Plans Rs 32cr Expansion

Gordon W Robinson, managing director of Tata Timken, said the installation of heavy capital equipment would constitute the first phase of expansion. The installation will ensure immediate production and allow for smaller infrastructure developments to proceed at an easier pace, he said.
A joint venture company between Tata Steel and Timken Company of the US, Tata Timken hopes to step up its annual production capacity of two million tapered bearings to five million once the expansion is in place.
The company has approached the Industrial Development Bank of India to part-fund the Rs 32-crore project, about 90 per cent of which will be invested in installing the grinding and heat-treating equipment.
The grinding equipment would be sourced entirely from the US as the technology was not available in the country, Robinson said. The heat-treating equipment will be of predominantly Indian origin, and the company plans to sub-contract local manufacturers for supplies.
All equipment parts will be made according to the specifications of the parent company. The expansion could enable Tata Timken to wipe out its accumulated losses of Rs 43 crore.
