VXL Instruments, the Rs 52-crore terminal and computer manufacturer, last week launched Winlinx, a thin network computing product.
A Windows compatible item, Winlinx provides the user access to data and applications from a centralised server rather than a multitude of individual PCs. This network centric multiuser Windows or even Unix environment terminal basically provides connectivity to centralised processing servers in a cost-effective manner.
AV Kasargod, VXL's chairman and MD said: "Our customers have been constantly asking for Windows-based terminals which could also work with Unix. We saw an opportunity in the upcoming network computer technology and Winlinx is our first product in that direction."
VXL has identified potential customers as banks, hospitals, corporate and government customers.
Other likely benefits for this product would be the easy applications shift from LAN to WAN due to multiuser technology and the low network bandwidth requirements which suit dial-up connectivity conducive for stock exchanges, airline reservation and banking applications.
Winlinx works with multiuser Windows NT servers supporting ICA/3 protocol from Citrix System Inc.
Citrix Systems develops markets and supports multi-user application server under joint license and strategic agreement with Microsoft.
VXL Instruments, which recorded a sales turnover of Rs 52 crore for 1996-97, has projected a turnover of Rs 70 crore for the next financial year. Its exports sales, growing at the rate of 70 per cent, touched a figure of Rs 28 crore for 1996-97 and has targetted Rs 45 crore for 1997-98. The company exports 48 per cent of its products to the US, 46 per cent is for the domestic market while 3 per cent each is exported to Japan and Europe.
