A bland recipe Spice-d up

The big screens attracts, but it can't hold your attention for long

Budget smartphones have become such a common affair that choosing between them has become a Herculean task. But Spice's latest gizmo, Pinnacle Stylus, stands out with a 5.5-inch screen (a size still rare for a budget smartphone). They say that size matters but as far as we know, an Indian consumer looks for a lot more. Let's see how high Pinnacle reaches.

Design
The Spice Pinnacle Stylus comes with a 5.5-inch high-definition (1,280x720 pixels) display with good viewing angles and optimum brightness. As the name makes it obvious, the device comes with a stylus. However, the stylus is not responsive enough.

At 170g, the phone is weighty and it's difficult to get a good grip on. The removable back panel has a glossy finish and is smudge-prone.

Performance
The Mediatek quad core processor with a 1GB RAM is good enough to run most of your applications and the routine games without any lags.

However, playing the Ashphalt 8 on it was a horrid experience.

The phone offers a memory card slot, which can help you expand the device's storage capacity to 32GB. The full HD video playback fits the bill, too.

The 2,500 mAh battery in gets through a day's usage but it is difficult to say how it will hold up after the device is a few months old. The audio output from the loudspeaker is reasonable for indoor purposes.

Camera
The phones 8MP rear camera is okay. But it lets you down in poor light conditions, as images tend to get hazy. Also, when you view the pictures on a larger screen, the images get blurred. However, the 2MP front camera scores well.

Verdict
This is the difficult part but let's keep things simple.

The Spice Pinnacle Stylus is an average device and there aren't many things, apart from the size of the screen, to separate it from the other options available in the market in the same price bracket. Poor battery life and touch screen response are major turn-offs.

Had the price been slightly lower, I would have recommended this phone without fail. But at Rs 15,999, I would say the device disappoints.
