England captain Alastair Cook said he knew Jonathan Bairstow would be an international player from the moment he first set eyes on him after the Yorkshireman's impressive century set up a thumping Test win over Sri Lanka.
     England thrashed the tourists by an innings and 88 runs inside three days to win the first Test at Headingley on Saturday and so go 1-0 up in the three-match series.
	James Anderson made the most of overcast conditions ideally suited for swing bowling with a match haul of 10 for 45.
	In the process, he became the first England player to take 10 wickets in a Test at Headingley since fast-bowling great Fred Trueman did so on his Yorkshire home ground against Australia back in 1961.
	But it was current Yorkshire star Bairstow who laid the platform for Saturday's success by making 140 -- his first Test century in England -- after Cook's men were struggling at 83 for five having lost the toss.

The Solar Impulse 2 aircraft has landed in Dayton, Ohio the latest leg of a record-breaking trip to circle the globe without consuming a drop of fuel, hours after taking off from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
	The solar-powered plane piloted by Swiss businessman Andre Borschberg arrived at 9:56 pm (local time) yesterday at Dayton International Airport after a flight that lasted a 16 hours and 34 minutes, aimed at promoting renewable energy, a live video feed showed.
	The slow-moving, single-seat plane with the wingspan of a Boeing 747 cuts a flimsy figure, but it has traversed much of the globe in stages since taking off March 9, 2015 from Abu Dhabi, with Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard alternating as pilots.

United States Secretary of State John Kerry is set to meet Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi today for her new civilian government's first high level talks as Washington recalibrates its relationship with the former pariah state.
	The meeting comes days after the US lifted a host of financial and trade embargoes in recognition of dramatic political changes that saw landmark elections sweep Suu Kyi and her party into office after decades of junta rule.

Four men were charged with attempted murder today over the torching of a police car while two officers were inside during a protest in Paris this week, prosecutors said.
	The incident, which was caught on camera and widely shared on social media, occurred on Wednesday on the sidelines of a rare demonstration by French police against "anti-cop hatred".

A group of artists in the central French city of Lyon broke the record for the world's longest comic strip today with a 1.6 kilometre-long artwork, organisers said.
	The feat brings the figurative medal for the longest comic strip back to Lyon from New York, where a group in 2014 stole the French city's 2011 record with a 1.2-kilometre sequence of drawings.
	"We have recorded a 1,600-metre-long comic strip, or 1,625 metres to be precise," said Mathieu Diez, director of Lyon's comic festival, about the black-and-white cartoon that lines the wall of a tunnel in the city.
	Drawn by art students from Lyon and Barcelona, the comic tells the story of a 16-year-old girl named Lea who travels in time with the help of a magic pen from the Ice Age to the year 10,000.

At least 37 Zambians died when their passenger bus burst into flames after a crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials said today.
	"Thirty-seven people died and 22 others were seriously injured in a Zambian public transport bus accident" yesterday near the Congolese town of Mokambo in southeastern DR Congo, Jean Olondo, a local civil society leader, told AFP.
	Olonde, who helped in the rescue effort, said all the casualties were people from neighbouring Zambia.
	After a tyre puncture, "the bus, which was travelling at very high speed, collided into a termite mound" and burst into flames, he said.

Greece scrambled fighter jets to monitor a US passenger plane that failed to identify itself when entering Greek airspace this week, an official said today, confirming media reports.
	The Delta Air Lines aircraft, flying from Paris to Kuwait, entered the Athens Flight Information Region(FIR) at 19.10 (2240 IST) Thursday, the same day the EgyptAir plane crashed in the Mediterranean shortly after leaving Greek airspace.
	Its pilots failed to answer to repeated calls from the Greek Civil Aviation authorities, according to various media reports, confirmed to AFP by a Greek defence ministry source.

Iraqi forces killed at least two protesters while defending Baghdad's Green Zone, officials said today, as the troubled country's leaders warned against further escalation.
	The two supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr were the first casualties of the months-old protest movement started by the young cleric to push for political change.
	They were interred in the holy city of Najaf, which is home to the world's largest cemetery where millions of people from Iraq's Shiite majority are buried.
