As many as 33 people are feared dead, according to the Coast Guard, after a dive boat caught fire before dawn Monday off the Southern California coast.
Five people were rescued and Lt Cmdr Matthew Kroll told The Associated Press the Coast Guard was searching for others who may have been able to escape the fire by jumping from the boat.
He added, however, that 33 were feared dead. Two of the crew suffered minor injuries, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney.
Capt Brian McGrath of the Ventura County Fire Department confirmed some deaths to The Daily Beast but said he could not give an exact number.
The fire broke out before dawn aboard the dive boat Conception on the final day of a Labor Day weekend cruise to the Channel Islands.

Sri Lanka will request the extradition of an ex-central bank chief in relation to a USD 74 million insider trading scam, the attorney-general said Monday, months after Colombo accused Singapore of sheltering him.
Arjuna Mahendran, a Singapore national of Sri Lankan origin, was accused in 2015 of passing sensitive information to his bond-dealer son-in-law to make millions in undue profits.
"Documents amounting to 21,000 pages were submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence today to be lodged with Singapore," the attorney-general's spokeswoman Nishara Jayaratne said.
She said Mahendran had been indicted in June for causing losses of more than USD 11 million to the state.
Mahendran and his son-in-law are accused of manipulating bond auctions in 2015 and 2016.
He was named a key suspect in the scam in February last year and fled abroad, failing to appear in court to respond to charges.

Russia, Iran blame US for regional tensions

The US military is set to pull troops from five Afghan bases under a proposed deal with the Taliban, the US envoy leading talks with the insurgents said Monday, in some of the first confirmed details of a much-anticipated accord.
Zalmay Khalilzad, who has spent about a year negotiating with the Taliban, said the draw-down would occur within about four months of a final deal being approved -- provided the Taliban stick to their commitments.
"We have agreed that if the conditions proceed according to the agreement, we will leave within 135 days five bases in which we are present now," Khalilzad told Tolo News, according to an excerpt of an interview the Afghan TV station published on Twitter.
The Afghan-born envoy was speaking in Dari, and Tolo said the full interview would be broadcast later Monday.

Police say the remains of a suicide bomber who attacked a church in eastern Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday have been exhumed after a court order that they be buried elsewhere following public protests.
Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara says the remains were removed from Kalliyankadu cemetery in the presence of a judge, a medical officer and police and were taken to a hospital morgue. They will remain there with police protection until the government provides a new burial site.
An official last week said the remains consisted only of a head, but Gunasekara said they also included some other body parts.
Hundreds of people had protested the burial of Mohamed Azar, who attacked Zion Church in Batticaloa town, killing 27 people and wounding more than 70 others.

Some people have died and rescuers were searching for 34 more Monday morning after a fire broke out aboard a dive boat off the Southern California Coast.
Capt Brian McGrath of the Ventura County Fire Department confirmed some deaths to The Daily Beast but said he could not give an exact number.
Five crewmembers sleeping on the top deck of the 75-foot (20-meter) commercial scuba diving vessel were rescued, according to Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Kroll of the US Coast Guard. But he said 34 passengers who were sleeping below deck have not been accounted for.
One of the crew suffered minor injuries.
The Coast Guard has helicopters, small boats and a patrol cutter in the area for a search-and-rescue operation off of Santa Cruz Island, about 90 miles (140 kilometers) from Los Angeles.

Indian steel conglomerate Tata Steel on Monday announced the closure of a plant in the southern Welsh city of Newport, with a potential loss of around 400 jobs at the UK site.
The Indian steel giant announced that it had clinched the sale of a Canadian and Swedish plant as part of its worldwide Cogent Electrical Steels division but, despite exploring all options, the company has been unable to find a way forward for the Orb Electrical Steels plant.

Sharma slips in third round after disappointing show

Senior European officials are considering making an EU disaster contingency fund available to any member states hit by the economic fallout of an eventual "no deal" Brexit.
A proposal to reform the EU Solidarity Fund, set up in 2002 to support national and regional governments in the event of a major disaster, has been lodged with the European Commission.
A summary of the proposal on the commission website says the fund could "furnish member states with financial assistance to cover the heavy charges inflicted on them in the event the United Kingdom leaves without an accord."
It is not clear when a decision will be made but the commissioners meet on Wednesday and Britain is on course to leave the union on October 31, with or without a deal to cushion the economic blow.
The Solidarity Fund was set up in the aftermath of the devastating flood in central Europe in 2002, and has since spent more than five billion euros in response to around 80 "catastrophic events".

Sudanese police say a head-on collision between two busses has killed 15 people and left 22 others injured on a highway south of the capital.
The police statement said the crash occurred Monday when one of the busses attempted to pass another vehicle at high speed.
Road accidents are common in Sudan, often the result of badly maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws. The World Health Organization said road accidents killed more than 10,000 people in Sudan in 2018.
The police say one bus was traveling from Khartoum and the other was coming from the city of Kosti in White Nile province, 360 kilometers (223 miles) south of the capital.

Rescuers were scrambling Monday to reach more than 30 people who were sleeping below deck when their scuba-diving boat caught fire off the California coast, with reports of "numerous fatalities."
A major rescue operation was underway for the dozens of people trapped aboard the 75-foot (22-meter) boat, near Santa Cruz Island off the coast from Los Angeles, the Coast Guard tweeted.
Bill Nash, a spokesperson for Ventura County, told CNN many people were feared dead.
