Reliance Jio, India’s top telecom company by subscribers, aims to take the lead in 6G and artificial intelligence (AI) — a strategy that will lead to consistent returns for shareholders, said the company in its annual report on Thursday. With 191 million customers, it’s the world’s second largest 5G player after China.

The digital services arm of Reliance Industries is deploying a “comprehensive” AI service platform called JioBrain for use in network planning and maintenance, resource optimisation, and customer services. It will be taken to other industries in India and global markets.

"Jio is extending its leadership in technologies like 5G, fixed broadband and converged networks, to now address the huge opportunity provided by AI services,” said Reliance Industries in its annual report for 2024-25.

“Jio’s leadership in network, consumer and enterprise technologies will maintain its distinct competitive advantage. These indigenously developed technologies are being deployed at scale across India and will be taken to the rest of the world. This will ensure a long runway of growth and consistent shareholder returns.”

"Jio continues to work on future communication technologies and is actively researching and developing 6G technology, aiming to be a global leader in its development and deployment," said Reliance, adding it is building a satellite communication platform and partnering with SpaceX to offer Starlink’s broadband internet services in India.

Jio will use its infrastructure, software expertise, and data to collaborate with global partners to achieve the world’s lowest AI operating costs in India and make the technology ubiquitous, said the telecom company.

JioFiber service has reached more than 18 million households. Jio’s suite of digital platforms is accessible to its over 438 million users for entertainment, communication, and education.

"The company is also focusing on developing indigenously developed technologies and fostering partnerships to deliver best-in-class products and services to customers both within and beyond India," said the report.

Jio has filed more than 3,341 patents, including 1,654 in FY 25. Jio Platforms and its subsidiaries were granted 154 patents in FY25. As of March 31, Jio held 485 patents, which the company claimed made it India’s largest patent holder in 5G and 6G technologies.

Jio's fibre network and fixed wireless access (FWA) rollout were on track to connect 100 million premises with digital solutions. JioAirFiber is close to global leadership in FWA with around 6 million homes, said the company.

Digital services achieved a revenue of Rs 154,119 crore in FY25, driven by tariff increase in the mobility business, enterprise services and scaling up of digital platforms. The business registered an ebitda of Rs 65,001 crore. The company's total wireless broadband user base stands at over 488 million. In FY24, Jio reported strong financial performance. Average revenue per user increased to Rs 185 from Rs 179 in FY23, growing 3.4 per cent.
