India Women's team produced a commanding batting display before a late collapse saw them bowled out for 330 in 48.5 overs against Australia in their ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 encounter in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Coming into the contest on the back of a defeat against South Africa, India looked set for a total well beyond 350 before losing six wickets for just 36 runs in the final phase of the innings. The score, however, remains India’s second-highest total against Australia in women’s ODIs.

Rawal and Mandhana set the tone

Openers Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana provided India with a rousing start, stitching together a century stand that laid the foundation for a massive total.

Rawal struck 75 off 96 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six, while Mandhana blazed her way to 80 off 66 deliveries, decorated with nine boundaries and three sixes. The pair added flair and stability at the top, keeping the Australian bowlers under pressure throughout the powerplay.

Reflecting on her innings, Rawal said:

“Very happy that we had that 100-run partnership. She likes to go in a way that is very entertaining. I was struggling in between with a few dot balls, but I’m happy that I converted the start into a big total. Everyone chipped in well, and I just tried to play each ball on its merit.”

Middle-order contributions but a slide at the end

The momentum carried through as Harleen Deol (38 off 42) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (22 off 17) kept the scoreboard moving briskly. Jemimah Rodrigues (33 off 21) and Richa Ghosh (32 off 22) added late acceleration, taking India past the 300 mark.

However, what appeared to be a march toward 350 unravelled quickly as the middle and lower order collapsed against Australia’s disciplined attack. From a position of dominance, India lost six wickets in a span of 36 runs, failing to bat out their full 50 overs.

Sutherland’s five-for halts India’s surge

For Australia, Annabel Sutherland delivered a match-turning spell, taking 5 for 40 in 9.5 overs, including the key wickets of Rawal, Rodrigues, Ghosh, and lower-order batters.

Sophie Molineux supported her well with 3 for 75, while Megan Schutt and Ashleigh Gardner picked up a wicket apiece. The Australian bowlers recovered admirably after an expensive first half, using slower deliveries and variations to stem India’s scoring rate.

India set competitive target

Despite the late setback, India’s total of 330 remains a formidable one, especially on a surface that has shown signs of slowing down. With runs on the board and spinners expected to play a role, the Indian bowlers will look to bounce back after their previous defeat and push for a crucial win in their World Cup campaign.

Australia skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and elected to bowl first  Both skippers after the toss:  Alyssa Healy: We're going to bowl. Got dewy last evening while training. Just one change. Molineux is back and Wareham misses out. At some point during World Cups, you just need to get what needs to be done and get the win. My first time back in Vizag in a long time. Should be a great atmosphere. Girls are pumped for that.  Harmanpreet Kaur: Pitch looks better than what we had in the last game. Same XI. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It's about how you bounce back. We were there in the game for 95 overs, lots of positives for us. They've always been important for us. Always been nice, cheering the team day and night. Biggest part in our lives that we're getting this support.

On the other hand, Australia Women, the defending champions, have maintained their unbeaten run. After a wobbly start against Pakistan, where they collapsed to 76/7, Beth Mooney’s match-winning century turned the game around and led them to a comprehensive 107-run victory. The Aussies are currently top of the standings and looking strong. Notably, the two sides recently met in a three-match ODI series before the tournament, with Australia clinching the series 2-1.
