BSNL plans to launch 4G in Dec; pan-India roll-out by June next year

State-owned telecom firm BSNL is planning to launch 4G service in December at a small scale and then roll it out across the country by June next year, Chairman and Managing Director P K Purwar said on Saturday. Speaking to PTI at the India Mobile Congress, Purwar said that the company plans to upgrade 4G service to 5G after June. "BSNL 4G service is ready for launch in Punjab in December. We have already done the hardening required for a network with 200 sites. We are in the process of installing 3,000 sites in Punjab," Purwar said. He said that BSNL will gradually increase network deployment to 6,000 and then to 9,000, 12,000 and 15,000 sites per month. "Our target is to complete 4G roll-out by June 2024. Post June 2024, we will be moving to 5G services," Purwar said. 336 villages in Arunachal to get 4G connectivity, 254 mobile towers set up

Around 336 villages in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh will be provided with 4G mobile telephony connectivity with the government launching 254 network towers on Saturday. The government has approved the construction of 2,605 4G mobile towers for providing connectivity to more than 3,721 villages in Arunachal Pradesh with a total outlay of Rs 2,675 crore. "Today's launch has happened mostly in border areas. By and large, most of the villages will be in border areas. Our district headquarters like Itanagar are already connected. The target is to reach out to unconnected and unreached locations," Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said after a ceremony to dedicate the initial set of 254 mobile towers. State-run BSNL will use about Rs 53,000 crore in upgrading its network to 4G and 5G this year as well as revamping landline network across the country, Union Minister for IT and Telecom Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The Government has announced a capital infusion of Rs 52,937 crore in BSNL during the next fiscal year starting April 1, 2023. While speaking on Budget 2023-24, the minister said BSNL's capital infusion is part of the Rs 1.64 lakh crore revival package announced last year and most of the balance sheet items of BSNL have already been addressed. "BSNL has raised new debt using the sovereign guarantees which were announced in the package. Now, the physical installation of new towers, upgradation from 2G, 3G to 4G and 5G and a major revamp in the landline systems of the MTNL and BSNL network will be taken up in this year using the capital allocation of Rs 53,000 crore which has been made for BSNL," Vaishnaw said. "Our private and public partnership approach has given us a solution where the core was developed, invested by the public sector, public funds, and everything else sitting on it comes from the private partners. Reliance Jio tops 4G network speed chart in October, shows Trai data

Telecom major Jio topped the 4G network speed chart in terms of both average download and upload, according to data published by sector regulator Trai. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has dropped BSNL from the 4G speed chart in October as it is yet to roll out 4G services. In October, the telecom major maintained its leadership in download segment by recording an average speed of 20.3 megabits per second (mbps). It was followed by Airtel, which recorded a download speed of 15 mbps and Vodafone Idea (Vi) with 14.5 mbps speed. Jio's 4G upload speed declined marginally to 6.2 mbps in October from 6.4 mbps in September. However, it continued to maintain its lead in the segment. In September, Jio had pipped Vi to top the upload speed segment.
