CM Kejriwal fighting 'toughest battle against dictatorship': Manish Sisodia

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia extended birthday wishes to jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and said the party supremo has been fighting the "toughest battle against the dictatorship going on in the country". The Aam Aadmi Party will hold a series of events to celebrate the birthday of Kejriwal who turned 56 on Friday. "Happy birthday to the chief minister of Delhi, my dear friend and political guru Arvind Kejriwal ji, who fought the toughest battle against the dictatorship going on in the country. "We are proud to be soldiers of a patriotic and revolutionary leader who chose to go to jail rather than kneel before a dictator. Today the country's democracy is imprisoned in the form of Arvind Kejriwal," Sisodia said in a post in Hindi on 'X'. The former deputy chief minister will also commence his foot march in the evening. In a post on 'X', the AAP said, "Arvind Kejriwal is an idea that gets stronger the more it is suppressed." Delhi minister Atishi described Kejriwal

Kejriwal modern day freedom fighter, paid price for serving people: Gahlot

Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot, who hoisted the national flag at the Chhatrasal stadium here on the 78th Independence Day, hailed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as a "freedom fighter" who has been "punished" for working for people. Gahlot said he was distressed that an elected chief minister could not hoist the national flag because he is in jail. "Standing under this flag, I can say proudly that Arvind Kejriwal is a modern day freedom fighter because he accepted the punishment to work for the people of Delhi by going to the jail, but did not bow down or break in front of the anti-democratic forces," he said. Gahlot said the country did not get freedom just so that an elected chief minister could be put in jail, adding it got it to defeat illiteracy, poverty, unemployment and diseases. Kejriwal began the effort to free the country from these ills by providing quality education, healthcare, free electricity and world class transport facilities to the people in Delhi, he ...

L-G nominates Delhi HM Kailash Gahlot to hoist national flag on I-Day

Lt Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday nominated Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot to hoist the national flag at the state Independence Day event, officials at Raj Niwas said. The choice that bypasses several other senior government leaders is likely to set a stage for another round of tussle between the AAP dispensation and the LG Secretariat. "Lieutenant Governor is pleased to nominate Minister (Home), GNCTD, Kailash Gahlot to unfurl the National Flag at the State level Independence day celebrations at Chhatrasaal Stadium. Necessary arrangements may be made accordingly," LG's secretary Ashish Kundra said in a written communication to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar. Earlier in the day, the Delhi government's general administration department refused to implement department minister Gopal Rai's direction for the hosting of national flag by Education Minister Atishi.

SC defers hearing on Kejriwal's plea by 6 weeks to enable settlement

The Supreme Court on Monday deferred by six weeks hearing on a plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging a Delhi High Court order upholding the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case for retweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in 2018. A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna, Sanjay Kumar and R Mahadevan posted the matter for hearing after six weeks after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, sought some more time to work out a settlement. "We express regret but some more time may be given (for settlement). Currently, too many things are going on in this man's life," Singhvi submitted. Advocate Raghav Awasthi, appearing for the complainant, submitted that time may be given (to Kejriwal) but it should not be unlimited and some negotiations have to take place. Singhvi submitted that although he (Kejriwal) expresses regret for the tweet but it cannot be on his (complainant's) terms. The bench posted the matter f

People have to fight against 'dictatorship' in country, says Sisodia

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Saturday called upon party workers and people to fight against the "dictatorship" in the country, a day after he was released from jail in the Delhi excise policy case. Targeting the BJP, he also said these people are not more powerful than the Constitution. Every person has to fight against this "dictatorship" which is not just putting leaders in jail but also harassing citizens, Sisodia said while addressing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers at its headquarters here. He claimed that while in jail, he was not worried about getting bail but was pained seeing businessmen being put in prison in "fake cases just because they did not donate money to the BJP". The Supreme Court on Friday gave Sisodia bail in corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged excise policy "scam" and said his long incarceration of 17 months without trial had deprived him of the right to speedy justice. Maha assembly polls: AAP to contest all 36 Mumbai seats, says party leader

The Aam Aadmi Party will contest the Maharashtra assembly polls and field candidates on all 36 seats in Mumbai, its leader Preeti Sharma Menon said on Monday. Addressing a press conference here, she also said the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP was part of the opposition INDI alliance, adding "the alliance was for the Lok Sabha polls and will continue to be together at the national level". "The AAP will contest all 36 seats in Mumbai. In the rest of Maharashtra, our colleagues and volunteers are galvanised and preparations are on in full swing," Menon said. AAP is a national party which under the visionary leadership of Kejriwal had emerged from a people's movement and is now in power in Delhi and Punjab, while it has MLAs in Goa and Gujarat as well as MPs, she asserted. In just 10 years, the AAP has demonstrated the "Delhi model" of development, under which quality education, healthcare, water and electricity is provided free to all and that too without corruption and without debt, she ..

Give AAP a chance in Haryana Assembly polls: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday asked people to give the AAP a chance at the assembly elections in Haryana, saying voting for the Congress, BJP and INLD has not improved anything in the state. Mann cited the programmes of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments in Punjab and Delhi and highlighted that party national convener Arvind Kejriwal was born in the state, as he made a pitch to voters for the Haryana Assembly polls due later this year. The AAP has already announced that it will contest all 90 seats in the state, claiming that people want a change in the government. Though the AAP has contested several polls in Haryana, it is yet to taste electoral success in the state. Addressing a gathering here, Mann said, "Haryana gave a chance to the Congress, BJP and INLD. But nothing has improved." In Punjab, he said, people gave the AAP 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 assembly polls, and in the two-and-a-half years since, his government has given over 43,000 jobs to the ..

Delhi LG inspects drains in Nizamuddin, calls ground reality shameful

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Sunday inspected three arterial drains in the Nizamuddin area and flagged their state "appalling & shameful" that were found to be heavily choked with silt, sludge and debris, Raj Niwas officials said. Hitting back at the Lt Governor, the AAP, in a statement, said, "Now that the monsoon is almost over, the LG has come forward, just to pay lip service and engage in dirty politics. It would have been better if the LG had taken action against the Chief Secretary and the PWD Secretary, as well as any other officers involved in the wrongdoings." "There is still time for the LG to take action against CS Naresh Kumar; otherwise, everything else is just a photo opportunity and blatant politics mere lip service," they said. In a series of posts on X, Saxena said he visited and inspected the Barapulla, Kushak and Sunehri drains and the historic Barapulla bridge at Nizamuddin today. SC to rule on Aug 5 on Delhi govt's plea against MCD's alderman appointment

The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on August 5 on a plea of the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government challenging the Lieutenant Governor's decision to nominate aldermen in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi without the aid and advice of the council of ministers. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha, JB Pardiwala had reserved its verdict in the matter on May 17, last year. As per the apex court's website, a bench headed by Justice PS Narasimha will be pronouncing the verdict. On May 17, last year the top court said giving the lieutenant governor the power to nominate aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will mean he can destabilise an elected civic body. The MCD has 250 elected and 10 nominated members. In December, 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defeated the BJP in the civic elections, winning 134 wards and ending the saffron party's 15-year run at the helm of the MCD. The BJP won 104 seats and the Congress finishe

SC to hear Manish Sisodia's bail pleas in Delhi excise policy case on Aug 5

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday pleas filed by AAP leader Manish Sisodia, seeking bail in corruption and money-laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan will take up for hearing both the pleas. On July 29, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for CBI and ED, had told the bench that while the Central Bureau of Investigation had filed its response on Sisodia's plea, it had not come on record. Raju had raised preliminary objections on Sisodia's pleas and said it was the second special leave petition challenging the same Delhi High Court order. "The same order can't be challenged twice," the law officer had submitted. Sisodia had earlier moved the apex court challenging the Delhi High Court's May 21 order dismissing his bail pleas. He had challenged in the high court a trial court's April 30 order rejecting his bail applications in the two cases. He was arrested by the CBI on February 2

Maliwal case: Delhi HC calls Bibhav Kumar's arrest a necessity as per law

The arrest of Arvind Kejriwal's close aide Bibhav Kumar in a case concerning alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal was "necessary" and police strictly followed the law while doing so, the Delhi High Court has said. The court, which on Friday dismissed Kumar's petition that claimed his arrest was illegal, said in its written judgment that there was no merit in his plea. Kumar, currently in judicial custody, allegedly assaulted Maliwal at Kejriwal's official residence on May 13. He was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 18. In his plea, Kumar had sought a direction to declare his arrest as illegal and in gross violation of the provisions of section 41A (notice of appearance before police officer) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and against the mandate of the law. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, in the judgment released on Saturday, observed that after the arrest, the trial court heard Kumar as well as the State before allowing police custody for five days and also noted tha
