TN BJP core committee to discuss AIADMK ties break up: Senior leader

The BJP, which was initially dazed over the AIADMK's decision to break up ties with it in Tamil Nadu, will discuss the issue and the other political developments at the party's core committee and executive committee meeting soon, a senior leader said on Thursday. Terming the Dravidian major's announcement to part ways with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance as "unfortunate", BJP national co-incharge of Tamil Nadu Dr Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy said the matter will be discussed at the party's state core committee and executive committee meeting soon. "I can't officially comment on the alliance. The Central leadership is watching the development in Tamil Nadu and they will take a call," Reddy told PTI. He however, remained tight slipped when asked if the party leadership has sought a "status report" on the AIADMK parting ways with the BJP, from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Another senior leader in the BJP indicated that only those senior leaders already in touch with

'BJP's like the camel in tent' Sibal's dig after AIADMK walks out of NDA

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Tuesday took a swipe at the BJP over the AIADMK walking out of the National Democratic Alliance, saying that another ally has left them and those still with them are "opportunistic alliances with no ideological glue". Ending its four-year-old ties with the BJP, the AIADMK on Monday announced it was walking out of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and said it would lead a separate front for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The decision to break away from the NDA was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai. In a post on X, Sibal said, "AIADMK exits NDA. Yet another ally leaves them! Those still with them are opportunistic alliances with no ideological glue: Pawar & Shinde in Maharashtra & alliances in the North East." The BJP is like the "camel in the tent", he said. Sibal, a Union minister during UPA I and II, quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to Rajya .

Stalin must talk to K'taka to secure 86.380 TMC Cauvery water: AIADMK

The opposition AIADMK on Saturday demanded Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin to negotiate with his Karnataka counterpart and secure 86.380 TMC Cauvery water due for the state. Accusing the Congress government of creating a problem for Tamil Nadu's farmers, AIADMK general secretary K Palaniswami said the Chief Minister should hold parleys with his counterpart Siddaramaiah and deputy chief Minister D K Shivakumar and obtain the Cauvery water. "Currently, the reservoirs in Karnataka have a storage of about 80 percent. Stalin should visit Bengaluru and hold talks with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, who are part of his alliance, and obtain 86.360 TMC water due for June, July and this August and save the Kuruvai paddy crop raised on 3.5 lakh acres which is on the verge of wilting," Palaniswami said in a statement here. He said the Cauvery water issue resurfaced after DMK's ally, the Congress, came to power in Karnataka. The AIADMK had since the era of later Chief Ministers: M G ...

AIADMK chief Palaniswami accuses DMK's partners of being 'servile'

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday accused the allies of DMK of being "servile" to the Tamil Nadu's ruling party and said partners in the National Democratic Alliance had freedom to speak facts. In Tamil Nadu, the former chief minister said it was his party, the AIADMK, that led the NDA while at the national level the BJP steered the coalition. The NDA would emerge victorious in 330 Lok Sabha constituencies across the country, the AIADMK top leader said in the national capital. Speaking to reporters, when asked if it was possible to garner 50 per cent plus vote share in view of factors such as price rise, Palaniswami said the country has witnessed growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi despite aspects like the coronavirus pandemic. Also, several economies in the world faced challenges. However, in India it was not the case as challenges were tackled well by the NDA. Across the world, the nation's reputation has grown under Modi's ...

No worry even if opposition to BJP means risk to DMK regime in TN: Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and ruling party chief M K Stalin on Sunday said there is nothing to worry even if the DMK-led state government faces a risk in view of its staunch opposition to the BJP. Speaking about the recent Patna meeting of opposition parties, Stalin said it is more important to ensure that a certain dispensation does not continue -- rather than focus on who captures power -- in an obvious reference to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre. Referring to the proposed next meeting of Opposition parties in Karnataka (17-18 July), the DMK chief claimed that the BJP regime in general and Modi in particular is infuriated by such developments. Hence, Modi is "talking something", forgetting that he is the Prime Minister. There is nothing to worry about that, he said. There need not be even a "wee bit of concern" about any scenario that may emerge, even if it means a threat to the DMK regime in view of the party's stiff opposition to the BJP, Stali

HC says 2019 LS election of expelled AIADMK member Ravindhranath invalid

The Madras High Court on Thursday declared invalid the 2019 election of expelled AIADMK member O P Ravindhranath from Tamil Nadu's Theni constituency. Ravindhranath is the son of deposed AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. Justice SS Sundar also declared the seat vacant. However, on a request made by the counsel for Ravindhranath, the judge suspended the operation of the order for a month to enable him to file an appeal before the Supreme Court. The ruling came on a petition filed by a voter from Theni constituency named P Milani. According to advocate V Arun, counsel for Milani, the petitioner contended that Ravindhranath while filing his nomination for the election had suppressed various materials including the particulars of his movable and immovable assets and liabilities, and those of his family members. The suppression of facts had materially affected the election, the lawyer said. Hence Milani filed the present election petition. Arun also said on beha
