Converting a third of general wards at all AIIMS into special wards and increasing the number of private wards can improve the revenue generating potential of the premier institute, according to recommendations made at the AIIMS Chintan Shivir. Improving healthcare services at all AIIMS across the country and identifying an implementable model suitable for sustainable revenue generation to reduce dependency on government funds were also among issues deliberated at the Shivir held in August. One of the recommendations was for constitution of a committee for revising the charges of AIIMS for non-paying and paying patients. "One-third of the general beds can be converted into special general ward, another one-third can be paying beds for above poverty line patients," it was recommended. Taking a strong stand against senior staffers asking security guards to fetch tea and refreshments during duty hours, new AIIMS Director M Srinivas on Thursday said security personnel should not be used for any purpose other than what they are engaged for. An office memorandum on September 29 also stated that any security staff found taking refreshments or eating food during duty hours will be removed from the rolls of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Newly appointed director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here M Srinivas has issued an order that files should be submitted in electronic mode, except for the confidential ones. Srinivas, who earlier served as the Dean of ESIC Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad, is now entrusted with the job of steering the country's most sought-after medical institute. "All concerned are hereby informed that henceforth all the files be submitted to the undersigned in e-file mode only unless the matter is confidential and cannot be submitted in e-filing mode," the office memorandum issued on Saturday said. M Srinivas, Dean of ESIC Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad, has been appointed as the Director of AIIMS-Delhi, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training. The order, dated September 9, stated the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Dr. Srinivas to the post of Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The appointment is "for a period of five years w.e.f the date of assumption of charge of the post, or till attaining the age of 65 years, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest." Celebrated comedian-actor Raju Srivastava died on Wednesday after over 40 days of hospitalisation here, said his brother Dipoo Srivastava. He was 58. Raju Srivastava suffered a heart attack on August 10 while working out at a hotel here. He was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and underwent angioplasty. Since then, he was on the ventilator and never gained consciousness. "I got a call from the family about half-an-hour ago saying he is no more. It is really unfortunate news. With Dr Randeep Guleria's second extended tenure as the director of AIIMS, New Delhi ending on September 23, the names of two doctors have been recommended for the top job in the premier institute, sources said. The Faculty Association of AIIMS-Delhi has sought opinion of its members on a government proposal to give specific names to all the 23 AIIMS in the country and contended that it will lead to loss of its identity. In a note circulated among its members, the association said "identity is linked with the name and if the identity is lost, institutional recognition is lost both within the country and outside." And, that is why famous and established universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard continue to have the same name for centuries.
