A former senior ASI official has said that the ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology being used in the ongoing scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex can detect if any structure is buried beneath the mosque. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Saturday resumed its scientific survey work at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple. Former additional director general of the ASI B R Mani said radar technology or ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology involves certain types of equipment. "These equipment are kept on the ground and electromagnetic waves or pulses are sent on the sub-surface level below the ground. These pulses come in contact with any anomaly like bricks, sand, stone, and metals and it is recorded on a monitor," said Mani, who is the Director General of the National Museum here. "Experts study it and make the alignment after which t
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) began working on a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi premises here on Friday to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple. The survey began at around 7 am, ASI sources said. The ASI team members, along with the representatives of the Hindu petitioners to a legal dispute involving the mosque, were present inside the complex under watertight security arrangements. The members of the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee have boycotted the survey. The representatives of the committee who were to accompany the ASI team for the survey abstained from doing so. The survey began after the Allahabad High Court on Thursday upheld a Varanasi district court order and ruled that the proposed step is "necessary in the interest of justice" and will benefit both sides. The order came after the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee, representing the Muslim side to the legal dispute, moved the Supreme

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday began hearing a plea against a district court order directing the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct a survey to determine if the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi was built upon a temple. The plea is being heard in the court of Prakash Padia. On Monday, the Supreme Court had halted the ASI survey till 5 pm Wednesday, allowing time for the mosque management to appeal against the lower court's order. The mosque is located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Hindu litigants in the district court had sought the survey to determine whether a temple existed at the same spot earlier. The apex court order to pause the survey came while the ASI team was inside the complex.
The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Registrar General of the Allahabad High Court to furnish details of suits related to the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute. A bench of Justices S K Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia was hearing a plea challenging the order passed by the high court which transferred to itself all matters related to the dispute pending before a Mathura court. Looking at the nature of the matter, is it not better that the high court tries the matter?. Thinking aloud, if it is tried at a higher level... pendency of matter causes its own disquiet, one side or the other", Justice Kaul observed. Justice Kaul orally observed that multiplicity of proceedings and prolongation are not in the interest of anybody. He said it will be better if the issue is settled at the high court level. The bench then said in its order, We consider it appropriate to ask Registrar of HC to forward to us what are the suits which are sought to be consolidated by the impugned order. The
The Allahabad High Court has stayed any coercive action against Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala till the disposal of his application before a Varanasi court to provide him with legible documents pertaining to a 23-year-old case of damage to public property. Justice Raj Beer Singh passed the order in a petition filed by Surjewala seeking legible and readable documents along with the charge sheet filed in the trial. He had challenged the order of the trial court rejecting his plea for the same. The trial court maintained that legible copies of the charge sheet along with all documents forming part of it had been supplied to the Congress leader. However, Surjewala told the High Court that the copies of several documents supplied by the trial court were not legible. During the course of hearing, the counsel for Surjewala referred to copies of certain documents annexed with the petition and pointed out that the same are not legible. It was argued that the apex cou
The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to hear the urgent mentioning of a plea against an order of the Allahabad High Court, which had directed the makers of the controversial movie "Adipurush" to appear before it on July 27. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud asked the counsel appearing for the makers of the movie to mention it on Thursday. It was hearing separate petitions of Kuldeep Tiwari and Naveen Dhawan seeking a ban on the movie. The Allahabad High Court on Monday dismissed a writ petition filed by the Shri Krishna Janambhoomi Mukti Nirman Trust requesting the court to direct the Mathura civil judge to decide its application for scientific survey of Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah mosque premises first before deciding the objections raised against the suit. The objections against the suit were raised by the management committee of the mosque and Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board. Justice Jayant Banerjee dismissed the writ petition filed by the Trust after hearing counsel for the petitioner, Suresh Kumar Maurya, and counsel for the UP Sunni Central Waqf Board, Punit Kumar Gupta. In January this year, the Trust had filed a suit before the civil judge, Mathura, along with a map with a request to protect its interest as well as constitutional rights. The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of a plea filed by the wife of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari's aide Sanjeev Maheshwari Jeeva, who was shot dead on Lucknow court premises earlier this month, challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court which had dismissed her petition to provide police protection to her husband. A vacation bench of Justices A S Oka and K V Viswanathan said nothing survives in the matter now. "You are seeking relief for whose benefit now? You are seeking relief for the benefit of a person who is no more," the bench said, adding, "Even if we set aside this order (of the high court), can we grant you the relief which was sought before the high court?" The apex court said the petitioner had sought relief from the high court for the benefit of her husband, who is now dead. "Now it is an admitted position that the petitioner's husband is no more.
