The CBI arrested an enforcement officer of the EPFO on Monday while allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a software company which had received funds of more than Rs 3 crore under the central government's Atmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana, officials said. Arrested officer P Kabilan in Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, had allegedly come to know that the company received Rs 3 crore from the Centre under the scheme to boost creations of new jobs in formal sector through the support of EPF contributions for new employees, they said. Kabilan allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 15 lakh, five per cent of the total funds, from the owner of the software company for not taking action against it. Two owners of the firecrackers factory in Madhya Pradesh's Harda town, where an explosion and subsequent blaze killed 11 people and injured 174 others, have been arrested by the police, officials said. They were booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among other charges, after an FIR was filed against them on Tuesday evening, they said. Another person was detained in connection with the incident that took place on Tuesday in the Bairagarh locality on Magardha Road on the outskirts of Harda town, approximately 150km from the state capital Bhopal. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will meet the injured persons and families of the deceased in Harda on Wednesday, an official said. Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office apprehended former vice-education minister Yoshitaka Ikeda on suspicion of failing to report fundraising proceeds he received from his faction within the governing Liberal Democratic Party, according to officials and local media reports. The Excise Department sleuths here have busted an inter-state illicit liquor racket and arrested three persons from near Talapady bordering Kerala. In a raid conducted under the leadership of Excise Department Deputy Commissioner T M Srinivas, the officials seized 2,240 litres of spirit, 222 litres of fake brandy and a machine used for packing from a house at Santya in Kinya panchayat limits of Dakshina Kannada district. In a separate raid, 210 litres of spirit, 20 litres of fake brandy, 2.24 litres of fake Prestige whisky and an Innova car carrying 70 litres of spirit were seized from a house near Talapady mosque, Excise Department sources said on Wednesday. The arrested persons have been identified as Sathish of Talapady, Naushad and Ansif, both residents of Kunjathur. Another accused, Nithyananda Bhandary, managed to escape during the raid. The Excise team is in the process of identifying all those involved in the racket, sources said.
Two people have been arrested in connection with a fire that damaged an Atlanta apartment complex and led to more than a hundred evacuations. Police has registered a case against about 160 people for allegedly forcibly entering into flats built under a government scheme in Maharashtra's Thane district while protesting against the housing project on village land, officials said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday when the people from Bhandarli and Gotheghar villages allegedly entered three buildings, broke the locks of 400 flats and occupied them, police said. The villagers have long been opposing the project developed by the Konkan Housing and Area Development Board in the two villages under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, an official from Daighar police station said quoting the FIR. They had earlier put up banners warning that they would enter the houses on November 7, the FIR said. A probe is on into the case, the official added.
Police have arrested 49 people in connection with the violence in Maharashtra's Beed district during the ongoing agitation for Maratha reservation, an official said on Tuesday. A curfew was imposed in parts of Beed district on Monday evening after a series of incidents of violence and arson targeting properties of politicians. The situation is currently under control, Beed Superintendent of Police Nandkumar Thakur told PTI. "Offences for rioting and putting lives in danger have been lodged in connection with the incidents. So far, 49 agitators have been arrested. There was no untoward incident at night, and the situation is under control," he said. Additional police force has been deployed in the district to maintain law and order, the official said. An offence has been registered against seven developers for carrying out construction works without seeking permission from the civic authorities in Navi Mumbai, police said on Sunday. Based on a complaint lodged by an official of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), the police on Saturday registered a case under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, an official said. The developers had allegedly been carrying out construction activities at seven locations in Turbhe since August without the NMMC's permission, he said. No arrest has been made in the case and further probe is underway, the official said.

The CBI has arrested seven persons including the Executive Secretary of the CMD of public sector undertaking Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd in an alleged Rs 20 lakh bribery case involving the award of tender for Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Odisha to a Gujarat-based private firm, officials said Sunday. The CBI arrested Executive Secretary Ashish Razdan and owner of private company Hetal Kumar Pravinchandra Rajyaguru, and conducted searches in Kolkata, Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Rajkot recovering Rs 19.96 lakh of the bribe money and another Rs 26.60 lakh in cash, they said. Five more private persons were arrested during the trap operation, they said. "During investigation, it was found that the said bribe was allegedly meant for the Executive Secretary to CMD, Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd (a Public Servant). The said Executive Secretary and other private persons were also caught," the CBI Spokesperson said in a statement.
