The Tihar authorities have informed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that his letter to Lt Governor VK Saxena saying Atishi would hoist the Tricolour on Independence Day was "an abuse of privileges" granted to him under the Delhi Prison Rules. The superintendent of Tihar's jail number 2 cited various provisions of the Delhi Prisons Rules, 2018, and advised Kejriwal in a letter "to desist from any such impermissible activity" or his privileges would be curtailed. In a letter to the lieutenant governor last week, Kejriwal said Cabinet minister Atishi would hoist the national flag during the Delhi government's Independence Day programme in his stead. The lieutenant governor's office, however, had denied receiving any communication from the chief minister. Kejriwal is lodged in Tihar jail in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case in connection with the alleged excise policy scam. He has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in the excise policy-linked money-laundering case
The Supreme Court on Monday deferred by six weeks hearing on a plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging a Delhi High Court order upholding the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case for retweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in 2018. A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna, Sanjay Kumar and R Mahadevan posted the matter for hearing after six weeks after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, sought some more time to work out a settlement. "We express regret but some more time may be given (for settlement). Currently, too many things are going on in this man's life," Singhvi submitted. Advocate Raghav Awasthi, appearing for the complainant, submitted that time may be given (to Kejriwal) but it should not be unlimited and some negotiations have to take place. Singhvi submitted that although he (Kejriwal) expresses regret for the tweet but it cannot be on his (complainant's) terms. The bench posted the matter f

AAP leader Manish Sisodia held a meeting with senior leaders on Sunday to discuss the strategy for the Delhi Assembly polls slated to be held early next year. Senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including Delhi ministers Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Gopal Rai as well as the party's Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and Sandeep Pathak attended the meeting. Gopal Rai is also the convener of the party's Delhi unit. Later, Sandeep Pathak, who is also the AAP's national general secretary (organisation), said the strategy for the Delhi Assembly polls and the political situation in the national capital were discussed in the meet. "Sisodia will hold a meeting with MLAs on Monday and with party councillors on Tuesday. On August 14, he will begin a foot march to meet the people of Delhi. "It has become clear to the people of the country that the BJP has only one agenda -- to stop our work and break our party. Despite such adverse conditions, the AAP has stood strong and is doing good work," Pathak

The BJP held a protest outside Tihar jail on Tuesday to demand Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation after a high court verdict upholding his arrest by the CBI in a corruption case stemming from the alleged excise policy scam. Carrying placards, the protesters raised slogans outside Tihar jail where Kejriwal is lodged. Delhi High Court on Monday upheld the chief minister's arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a corruption case related to the alleged excise scam. The high court also disposed of his bail plea and granted him the liberty to approach the trial court for relief. Claiming that governance and administration had become paralysed, the BJP's Delhi unit chief Virendra Sachdeva said Kejriwal should step down immediately rather than insist on running the government from jail after the order. "No minister of the AAP government is ready to take responsibility for any issue and they are busy shifting the blame on officers. Corruption has risen to ne
The BJP on Monday reiterated its demand for resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after the high court verdict upholding his arrest by the CBI in a corruption case stemming from the alleged excise policy scam. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that it's "unfortunate" that the BJP is trying to "mislead" the people of Delhi. Addressing a press conference, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said in both the decisions -- the Supreme Court's order on the lieutenant governor's power to appoint aldermen to MCD and the Delhi High Court's verdict in excise policy case -- are victories of the people of Delhi. "The question now is whether Kejriwal has the moral authority to remain the Chief Minister of Delhi," Sachdeva said and added the administration was "paralysed" and no AAP minister was ready to be accountable for it. "The high court order has vindicated BJP's allegations that the AAP and the Kejriwal government looted Delhi in the excise policy scam," he charged. It has .
The Aam Aadmi Party will contest the Maharashtra assembly polls and field candidates on all 36 seats in Mumbai, its leader Preeti Sharma Menon said on Monday. Addressing a press conference here, she also said the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP was part of the opposition INDI alliance, adding "the alliance was for the Lok Sabha polls and will continue to be together at the national level". "The AAP will contest all 36 seats in Mumbai. In the rest of Maharashtra, our colleagues and volunteers are galvanised and preparations are on in full swing," Menon said. AAP is a national party which under the visionary leadership of Kejriwal had emerged from a people's movement and is now in power in Delhi and Punjab, while it has MLAs in Goa and Gujarat as well as MPs, she asserted. In just 10 years, the AAP has demonstrated the "Delhi model" of development, under which quality education, healthcare, water and electricity is provided free to all and that too without corruption and without debt, she ..

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday asked people to give the AAP a chance at the assembly elections in Haryana, saying voting for the Congress, BJP and INLD has not improved anything in the state. Mann cited the programmes of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments in Punjab and Delhi and highlighted that party national convener Arvind Kejriwal was born in the state, as he made a pitch to voters for the Haryana Assembly polls due later this year. The AAP has already announced that it will contest all 90 seats in the state, claiming that people want a change in the government. Though the AAP has contested several polls in Haryana, it is yet to taste electoral success in the state. Addressing a gathering here, Mann said, "Haryana gave a chance to the Congress, BJP and INLD. But nothing has improved." In Punjab, he said, people gave the AAP 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 assembly polls, and in the two-and-a-half years since, his government has given over 43,000 jobs to the ..
The arrest of Arvind Kejriwal's close aide Bibhav Kumar in a case concerning alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal was "necessary" and police strictly followed the law while doing so, the Delhi High Court has said. The court, which on Friday dismissed Kumar's petition that claimed his arrest was illegal, said in its written judgment that there was no merit in his plea. Kumar, currently in judicial custody, allegedly assaulted Maliwal at Kejriwal's official residence on May 13. He was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 18. In his plea, Kumar had sought a direction to declare his arrest as illegal and in gross violation of the provisions of section 41A (notice of appearance before police officer) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and against the mandate of the law. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, in the judgment released on Saturday, observed that after the arrest, the trial court heard Kumar as well as the State before allowing police custody for five days and also noted tha
AAP leaders and workers on Saturday held a protest near the Raj Niwas demanding the resignation of Lt Governor V K Saxena over a woman and her child dying after they slipped into a water-logged drain in east Delhi. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has claimed that the drain comes under the jurisdiction of the Lt Governor-headed DDA, the Raj Niwas has said the portion of the drain they slipped into was under the AAP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The woman and her son drowned in the drain of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which is controlled by the LG, AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar said during the protest. "This was a murder, not an accident and the officers responsible for it should be charged with murder," Kumar said. The protesters, raising slogans and demanding resignation of the LG, marched towards the Raj Niwas but were stopped by police at a barricade. The LG office on Friday accused AAP leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, of issuing "patently false ...

Mann, who holds a diplomatic passport, was scheduled to visit Paris from August 3 to 9 for the Indian hockey team's quarterfinal match on August 4, and had sought political clearance for his visit. The Centre denied him the permission, saying that since Mann is a Z-Plus security protectee, it is not possible to arrange his level of security at a short notice, the source in the state government said. The Chief Minister's Office was informed of the decision Friday evening, the person said. Political clearance for senior political leaders is required from the Ministry of External Affairs for travelling abroad. Is this kind of goon supposed to work in the CM's residence, the Supreme Court asked on Thursday as it came down heavily on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar who allegedly assaulted AAP MP Swati Maliwal earlier this year. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta and Ujjal Bhuyan posted Kumar's bail plea for next Wednesday and told senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi that the court was shocked with the details of the incident recorded by the Delhi High Court. Kumar has challenged the July 12 order of the Delhi High Court denying him bail in the case and claimed the allegations against him are false. He has also said his custody was no longer required as the probe was over. The apex notice issued notice to the Delhi government on his plea. "Is CM residence a private bungalow? Is this kind of 'goon' supposed to work in the CM's residence?" the bench asked Singhvi, who said there were non-serious injuries and the FIR was lodged after three days of the incident

Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal took cognisance of the final report and posted the matter for scrutiny of documents on August 24. The court also directed that a copy of the charge sheet be supplied to Kumar, who is accused of assaulting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Maliwal on May 13 here at the chief minister's official residence. The city police had filed the charge sheet on July 16.
