Will eradicate child marriage in Assam by 2026, says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

The Assam government's approach of taking legal action against child marriage led to an 81 per cent decline in such cases in 20 of its 35 districts between 2021-22 and 2023-24, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The chief minister also vowed to eradicate child marriage completely in Assam by 2026, according to an official release. Assam's relentless campaign to weed out child marriage received commendation during the NDA chief ministers' conclave held here on Sunday, Sarma said. At the conclave, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam came in for much appreciation from the Union ministers, chief ministers of other states, and Modi himself, for its "vigorous and relentless" efforts to eliminate child marriage, he said. 71 'anti-nationals' arrested in Assam after Pahalgam attack: CM Himanta

Three more people have been apprehended in Assam for allegedly being involved in "anti-national" activities, following the Pahalgam terror attack, taking the total number of such arrests to 71 so far, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday. In a post on X, Sarma said one person each was arrested from Kokrajhar, Goalpara and South Salmara-Mankachar districts. Operations continue after 10 militants gunned down in Manipur's Chandel

At least 10 militants were killed in a gunfight with an Assam Rifles unit in Manipur's Chandel district on Wednesday, officials said. The operation is still in progress, they said. OTPC, Assam Power Corp jointly developing 250 MW battery energy system

ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd (OTPCL), a subsidiary of ONGC, and Assam Power Development Corporation Ltd are jointly developing a 250 MW battery energy system, an official said here on Sunday. Under the project, power generated from solar power will be stored in the battery energy system and will be available for distribution through power substations during peak hours. "We have floated a joint venture with the Assam Power Development Corporation to set up a 250-MW battery energy system in Assam. The technology is new to store solar power through a battery energy system for using it during the peak hours or at night when solar energy generation goes off," the official said. According to him, since the concept is new to energy players, the setting up of a 250 MW battery energy system will be implemented in a phased manner. Pahalgam terror attack: Arrests for 'pro-Pakistan' posts rise to 9 in Assam

One more person was apprehended in Assam for his alleged pro-Pakistan stand in the wake of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, taking the total number of such arrests in the state to nine, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. NFL to pick 18% stake for Rs 572 cr in JV to set up urea plant in Assam

State-owned National Fertilizers Ltd (NFL) will pick up an 18 per cent stake for about Rs 572 crore in a proposed joint venture to establish a urea plant in Assam. In a regulatory filing on Friday, NFL informed that its board has given "consent to enter into Joint Venture Agreement with other nominated companies to form a Joint Venture company for setting up of a new Ammonia-Urea Complex Namrup-IV Fertilizer Plant at Namrup, Assam". NFL will have an 18 per cent stake in the joint venture, which is being incorporated. The cost of acquisition of the 18 per cent shareholding is estimated at Rs 572.45 crore, the filing said. Seven people have been arrested in connection with protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act leading to a clash between agitators and police in Assam's Cachar district, an officer said on Wednesday. The protest march was taken out on Sunday without permission from Berenga Village towards Silchar town and the agitators threw stones at the police with the latter resorting to a mild lathi charge, Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said. Prohibitory orders were clamped in the district to prevent further outbreak of violence, Mahatta told reporters here.
